What is the average salary of a CRNA (nurse anesthetist) in Germany

What is the average salary of a CRNA (nurse anesthetist) in Germany?
I am thinking of studying nursing in germany, and if I did do this, I would want to go on and become a nurse anesthetist. However, I have heard that nurses have really crappy salaries in germany, so I was wondering what an ordinary registered nurse made, and then if possible what a nurse anesthetist made. Thanks!

If money is your only concern ( and it shoud NOT be ),l then do not do it. American nurses are totally overpaid. That's why our system does not work. It's too expensive. nurse anesthetist ? There's no such thing. Nurses don't do that over there. Only a doctor can do it. It would be around 2 000 Euros a month

I looked at something like this a couple years ago. A friend of mine from Guatemala was going to move to USA and he's a doctor. He would have had to take a competency test to be licensed in USA. I remember he would probably have had to study for 6 months (estimate) in order to have a good chance at passing the test. He stayed in Guatemala with a practice there.
    2 :
professional licencing [includes nurses] in US is run by the individual states. each state has their requirements avail on the internet. google will find the entry websites for you for any state you're interested in. the good news is that many US states have a shortage of nurses. That means there is a fair chance of getting a work visa -- the the US government's website for details. I would not be surprised to discover that a US employer has to apply for the visa on your behalf. There is an employer certification required saying that they're tried and failed to full their position with a US citizen. Which may mean that you need to find a US employer as the first step. [Hint: major hospitals in large cities are more likely to know how to navigate the paperwork to facilitate your work visa and licence. Hospitals in those cities with many German tourists and/or many German business travelers may need your German language skills which they'll likely be unable to find in the US labor market.] What kind of nursing do you wish to do? IS THE CHURCH DYING OFF

      IS THE CHURCH DYING OFF?
While I see a a large scale most people aren't willing to pick up M 16 and attack churches like we do to Iraquis people but I am starting to see that a large percentage of people are set dead against the church. A lot of people seem to think that science is at war with the church and that the church is just a bunch of hipocrites enslaving people and taking their will away from them, but how can we truly say that when our enture moral institution has been created by it. It seems that when a lot of people go through hardships, those who really aren't religious in any way they suddenly take up arms against the church blaming them for all their problems and calling all people who believe in something they cannot see foolish. We can't see cells or atoms and yet we all know that they are their, we can't feel light yet it is always around us, is their a reason why all our great philosiphors, scientist and leaders were Christians, or do you think that because hey have a quarrel with the church they simply huddled in a dark corner created be them and said "The church is wrong so anyone who believes in it is stupid." no they changed it, when you love something and you see that it is doing something wrong you try and change it, you don't lock yourself away. But no, because we don't believe that we should sacrifice something for others we just call it a blind and foolish institution. Where are the poeple who were willing to die by their words, to protect the innocent, to care for the sick and elderly (I know that their are people who work in nursing home who disbelieve in the church, but they only see what they are doing as a job a 9 - 4 not as something good or special), why have people gotten so ignorant, we have information at our fingertips. When you find something wrong aren't you supposed to try to change it, when African Americans wanted to be treated equally didn't they march, did they rebel (Yes I know the Black Panther but their were like 45 people in it out of 190,000,000) against American and take up arms. No becasue they saw the country and they loved it so they wanted to change it, when you dwelve deeper onto something you can change it, people, humans have existed only for millions of years because of their ability to take difficult situation, learn form them and adapt. So why is everyone attacking the church, are we going to have some religious revolution, where alll religious people are killed off because they see sonmething that you don't and you don't like them, hasn't every country's foundation been against elitism, didn't our grandparents fought against the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, and Nazi Germany so that we could be free, if so then why are we condemning another people? Yes I know I switch between religion and Christianity but hey, deal with it. TruIy am amazed, these are the most ignorant answers I've seen in a while. Is it because none of you want to think, to even come up with the idea that maybe constant attacking the very thing that hold's up our moral conscience we will eventually destroy it and ourselves. Your all just a bunch of kids, if you actually believe that humans are attracted to religions genetically and that you are some sort of demigod by being free of it. This is exactly that amount of idiotic elitism that I expent from this crowd, this group of neo-communists. Do any of ou even know what scientist are required to do, well it is to present information, of which can be interpreted in any way or form, but all of you would rather lie down and let your exalted leaders think for you than question these scientific studies where is your backbone, or do you only posess it when bullying others. PLease stop criticising me and just answer the question, your wasting space. You keep citing books why, is it because you believe I haven't read any, well I have, and I have come to the point, where I see my ideal of perspective coming out. But really telling me to read this and this book isn't going to help, if you read it then you should be able to tell me about it not point me, damn have you all lost your ability to think, the philosophers and scientists you praise so highly would be ashamed, I bet you allof you went on wikipedia rwead a book and decided that you know everything, well they say that ignorance is absolute. 100 buck this gets shut down heheheh

Christianity in the UK about 30 years ago was as strong as it is in the USA now. I live in a town of about 25-30,000 people, in the main C of E church on a Sunday they are lucky to have 30 worshippers, sometimes they join the Methodists, who also have a massive church and no worshippers, even though this is a town where John Wesley visited numerous times. The larger Catholic church was forced to close and the JW's moved to a larger city, there are still Mormons though, but you never see them in their temple, it might have closed as well.

      20 :

      21 :
I'm not reading all that, but yes the church has been dying off for 2 thousand years and counting.
      22 :
The last throes of the Church are embarrassingly obvious in some places!
      23 :
Yes the church is dying off, but not the original, which is the human heart. That one is here to stay, not the 'elevated' christian religions. I was born again once I left religion and discovered who I Truly was 'within.' Religion only led me away from discovering this wonderful Life and it also led me away from discovering my own Spirit. If people insist on joining a religion then join this one: :) The human race! http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=2539741 :) This is what it's all about, not the hokey pokey. :) Once you stop bullying others I'm sure they will stop bullying you. Remember, "you get what you give." Change the way you are with people and they will change their behavior toward you as well. No one here follows any leaders but thinks for themselves with the brain they were born with. That's the whole point.
      24 :
I think that the blind faith fundamentalism is dying off as the sciences begin to make it very clear that the christian bible simply is not a book to be taken literally. Fundamentalist views are not mainstream now because of this, and as time and technology pass--fundamentalism will be relegated to the uneducated being led by those who use their flocks to mantain their own personal hold on them. The religion itself is evolving--the catholics agreeing that yes evolution is most likely the mechanism of life on earth is a case in point. What will happen with the christian religion mainstream is that as time goes on it will evolve--many of it's moral tenets will stay with the church--the superstitious aspects will eventually disappear.
      25 :
Think of it this way, churches may die off, but the will of GOD remains forever.....which is most important. Our love for God, through the Son, or the Church? Traditions were not made by God, but through men., who have distorted what he intended. I'm not saying that the churches will all be destroyed or are wrong. What I am saying is that there is a reason you go to church and you don't need one to find GOD.
      26 :
Hey you deal with it. Morality and sound social values existed before any religion came on the seen, religion brought murder rape and atrocities with it to such societies in the name of the new gods. You say thinkers and philosophers were Christian! Galileo was burned by the church and thinkers existed before christianity. In fact the church destroyed thinking and ideas and burnt such people at the stake. Christianity stopped the progress of human thought in the middle ages and committed murder in its name in the crusades, North America, Andalusia (Spain), Australasia, Africa, Bosnia etc. etc. And you wonder why we attack the Church, or any other religious structure come to that! Read your history and the doings of religions not just from the bible or sermons. Open your mind and seek the truth and thee shall find, baby!

i'm going to vent so if you would like to offer some advice please do, if not please save the sarcasm?
Okay so i feel like the biggest spoiled brat in the world, believe me, complaining about my life right now, like i totally completely understand, ppl are starving, ppl are dying, i have it sooo fricken GOOD! but i just CANNOT live like this anymore, and there are just ppl in my life that make me so angry, i have just had enough it all started when i was a happy, energetic, carefree 3 year old, my grandpa had a stroke and my family and I took care of him for over 10 years before he died a couple years ago. Yes not my 4 other aunts and uncles/ daughters and sons of my grandfather but just my dad. So there goes any childhood memories i would have had with a father. He basically sacrificed his whole life, his own family, his job ( we are currently on medicare-- anothe story comming up soon dealing with my grandmother) to take care of his dad. Anyways currently after all the trauma of the incident after incident of my grandpa almost dying, he finally did...and now we inch closer to the conflicts of today. My grandmother, a strong willed, stubburn little character ( i should tell u a little back story -- just a little background of my grandparents -- they were kidnapped as teenagers, u kno as laborers for da nazis during WWII in Germany) anyways back to the now. okay so of course history will now repeat itself and my grandmother will now develop dimentia and move in with us -- not with her retired children whose kids are already moved out and starting their own families, but again affecting the lives of kids currently still trying to make it through highschool and of a father who again, can't even provide for his own family because of all this I love my grandma, i try to sit and talk to her, at times she's okay but then she goes nuts and screams at you to get out our "her" (our) house. I KNOW she has dimentia but the emotional, mental exhaustion of just everything ( this is totally not even a fraction of the whole story -- im shortening it up for ya) is just overwhelming, i have to leave the house so she calms down-- its a small house i cant just ignore her, i cant study, get good grades, i've been failing since she moved in. cant eat ( sick of being anorexic), cant sleep ( she talk to herself all through the night) and most of all, all my dad cares about is my grandma, -- he absolutely refuses to put her in a nursing home even though every doctor friend we know is seriously requiring us to, would rather divorce my mother ( they never got along but stay together for us (their kids) so our family "looks" normal, still we would be so much better off, everyone would be happier) it doesn't matter if im sick -- but thats isn't even it, like i just wish he'd care ( i get severe periods where i pass out and overheat, ( my dad will have the heat all up in the SUMMER for my grandmother b/c of course she has to be cold) i just CANT live here, but wut am i gonna do? im only 15 another example, my grandma has a dog (tht of course i have to take care of, and she doesn't let anyone touch if she can help it) -- now this dog is DEPRESSED, locked up in a cage all night and day and if he makes ONE little sound my dad will beat the hell out of him and spray him till he is soaked and WILL NOT even let me take him out --( and this is even when my grandma isn't sleeping) my dad is just SOO unbelievably overprotective over his mother -- she's like his daughter, his wife, his life, nothing else matters) no matter what i do, its bad, wrong, disrespectful, if i talk, im "talking back" if i dont talk im "ignoring my parents" i just get yelled at all the time for nothing, trying to study, i dont talk drugs, smoke, or ask for ANYTHING like other kids do ( i seriously feel guilty when i need money for an english book cuz i kno my parents are broke), i just want a home again and not have to be a hobo, stranded at school till 7 or having to leave my house and not be able to get good grades and its not even my fault, its just not fair :/ is it? anyways im going to end this, its getting too crazy, i just ask, with such a busy summer coming up -- ap assignments, summer courses, summer job, and shit, i already CANNOT study for exams right now and i obviously cant drive, wut the hell am i going to do my grandmother moved in 7 months ago, my grandfather died 2 years ago

thats a fucking long ass question
      2 :
that is horrible....you have to work through it...I will explain. I have CP, Mild Autism and I am bi-polar...put simple..I have a lot of problems. It does not bother me at all. I put in the necessary work to get through. What you have to do is probably one the things you are doing...stay out of the house. Try to get friends houses to go over to. Hopefully your parents will let you do this. If not...go to a counselor at school and talk to them about this issue. I am not a psychologist nor a social worker, so I don't have a clue what options you have...but remember, options always exist. always..trust me
      3 :
wooww..... this is a very long story, but your actual problem. ii suggest you tell you mother everything what you have been telling us so that she can talk to your dad and compromise or do something about it. ii have heard that grand parents love their grand children more than their real children. i think the issue here is that your dad not being able to see any further than what he thinks. there is noone to tell him that he may be hurting someones feelings. Education is extremelyy important therefore tell it to your mother who must talk to your dad about it because that way, this family will not survive. your grand parents probably just do not want to leave the home and they think that their son would take care of them as they took care of your dad when he was a child and growing up. This however, does not mean that your education is sacrificed in the name of your grand parents. i agree they are your dad's parents but every person has a conscience in them that needs to be controlled. What you could do is to leave this yahoo question on the computer/ laptop and if your dad goes on the computer, he would see the question and understand what you are going through. The only way for you right now is really to somehow show this to your dad. i suggest the next time your grand ma or grand pa scream at you, just dont leave the home and let them deal with their own issues. now i am going to suggest something that i personally would not do, but many have done: to call the police and bs how your grand parents hurt you or domestic violence occured. This is a way you could get them out. well since you need to study, as them to be quiet. you do not need to be the good person anymore. stand up for yourself. but really think about it before you do anything. how would you feel if your children did this to your parents?? i am sure you would not like it. you could also call an animal shelter home (there are many names for them). i suggest that therapy may be eventually required somewhere. the best thing you could do right now is to talk to your guidance counsellor because they would be able to suggest any good ideas. Also try calling the "kids help phone". they do not ask you name, but you tell them your problem and they suggest actual things you can do. I mean i believe that anything is bettter than just accepting these facts. do you have any siblings? if yes then get together and speak up for yourself. and please: you need to take the dog out of there before its too late. aww poor dog ♥. may god bless him and protect him from your dad and your grandma. oh so she did not move in yet? if she did not then prevent your dad from letting her enter your home. i know this is going to be extremelyy hard but you have to do something about it. hope this helped you come up with your own plan. (:

How many people do you know who have hired an interior designer? How many do you know who have hired a plumber? That ratio would tell you the demand. Honestly, I'd spend my time studying something with better perspectives.
      2 :
Personally I don't know about the interior design bit but I'd say go with what you love. I watched a show a few weeks back about a lady who makes her living sorting out peoples closets. So it just depends. Here in the UK there are a lot of programmes on TV about getting into the property market, so someone could offer interior design services for those looking to sell after completion. So I just think it depends on the angle you're looking to pursue. You might have to create your own market by proving to people that they do need your service. I'm doing a home course as well on Web design, who knows where that will take me. It beats trying to learn a profession I have no interest in just for the money. That's how you end up with people who hate their work. Hope this helps just a bit. http://www.clearhealthandfitness.com/index.html

Husband is thinking about leaving Army to become a police officer...q's for those married to a p.o.

Husband is thinking about leaving Army to become a police officer...q's for those married to a p.o.?
My dh is a Captain in the Army. I am a stay at home mom. We have two small children. He hates the idea of moving around every few years for the next 14 years (until he can retire) because he feels it will be hard on the kids. He also isn't really into what he is doing right now (office work/intelligence) and we hate the threat of year long deployments. Pro's to staying in: good salary (at least 20-30K) more than what he'd make as a cop, chance to live in Germany/Florida/Colorado other places we'd like to explore, able to retire after 20 years with pension/benefits, great medical coverage, not stressful to change careers/make less money, we'd feel more financially secure to be able to have the third child we'd like to have Pro's to being a cop: not having to move every few years, able to chose to live somewhere we'd like to stay and closer to family--ie Washington State, able to build friendships with people in our community a little better, would be good for my future career--nursing, no more deployments!!, not as many long hours (maybe??) I'd like some input from either police officers or wives/signifigant others of police officers!! Thank you so much, Nancy

my ex husband was in the navy and then got out to be a police officer. yes they have good benefits, pay isnt that good. they can work side jobs which pays alot more but that means he wouldnt be home as much. police officers have a high divorce rate. not saying it will happen to you. while my ex husband and i were married he made enough money to where i can stay home with our two kids.
      2 :
My husband is in the police academy right now and even though he hasn't started working yet, i think i would choose that over being in the Army and moving all the time. Especially with kids, you want them to be close to their grandparents and you can make solid friendships with people that will last a lot longer. I understand the travel part which does sound exciting. But for that i would just save money and take vacations to those places. I learned that you have to support him in whatever makes him happy. My DH was working a job that paid about 30% more than he will make as an officer but was no longer enjoying it. Even though him being a cop is not quite where i saw our lives going, its going to make him proud of himself and give him the excitement he desires.

At one time the age was extended to students until age 23...then it didn't mater student or not or when you get married.(If you marry a civilian at 16 you loose it unless you marry military.) There are a lot of rules about this. You should check with the financial aid dept. and if there is a Veteran's rep at your school. Usually they have up-to-date info for vets/vet families going to school.
      4 :
Possibly, however, your Sponsor needs to apply, and it's only good if you are a FULL TIME student (College Letterhead, and ID required), and it's only good until you are 23... soon, I'm guessing, so, it may not be worth it.
      5 :
as long as you are still a legal dependent of your father( as in, he declares you on his taxes) and are a full time college student, you can have an ID until you are 23.
      6 :
Have you dad take you out to the ID card section with proof of your being a full-time student. You are still eligible.

Cologne and/or other German Natives...Jobs in Cologne

Cologne and/or other German Natives...Jobs in Cologne?
Hello there! I am going to try to make a list and chart of the costs of living in a small apartment in Cologne, Germany, with a dog and also attending college. Do you think I could afford 800 euro a month with any of the following jobs? I know that the cost of the apartment will vary with the landlord. But please give me a ballpark (estimate) of how much I would make working these jobs: 1. Working as a cashier at a local supermarket 2. Working at a gas station 3. Tutoring English maybe once or twice a week.- is $25 a lesson enough to charge, also considering I will be a student in college? 4. Cleaning houses Any other job suggestions would be so appreciated! Please keep in mind I have to attend college. I do not know how long that will be each day. I am considering going to get a major in nursing and a minor in teaching. I also have to provide for my boxer, and I need an apartment with a backyard. Also, any websites with apartments for rent in Cologne would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for your time! Thank you for your answers. I am a U.S. citizen. I appreciate your answers, thanks again.

You should have added you citizenship. Unless you are an EU citizen you will need to apply for a visa ( Student or work ) if you apply for a student visa be aware you will have to prove sufficient funds and language skills and you will be allowed to work part time only ( that means you will not be able to live on the job ) Also in case you are no EU citizen and intend to come to Germany for work be aware for the kind of jobs you intend to do it is close to impossible to get a visa. Every employer who is hiring you would need to prove there was no German or other EU citizen who could do the job or wanted it. To be a teacher in Germany requires you to have a degree as teacher and at public schools ( more than 90 % of schools ) to be either a German citizen or a long term resident ( 8 years +) since teachers at public schools are civil servants. To work freelance would be an alternative but be aware oh high and very complicated tax system. Most freelancers have to hire a professional ( Steuerberater) to file their taxes. Sorry to sound a bit disappointing and good luck anyway

First of all be aware unless you are EU citizen you will need a work visa and for the kind of jobs you suggest it is impossible to get that . If you are an EU citizen ( UK ? ) just check out the website of Arbeitsagentur a part is even available in English That is the official site every job which is offered has to be announced on there. In case you work as a freelance tutor be aware you need to pay taxes !!!

topic for my Service Writing Project

topic for my Service Writing Project?
Alright, so I have an essay/project coming up and it's a "service writing project". Here is some information my teacher wrote about it: "Your sixth writing assignment is to find a creative way to serve someone with your writing abilities. Some ideas might be to write a letter to a missionary, a story to share at a children’s hospital or nursing home, or a recipe to share with a neighbor." Some other info: "The topic is open. You may write using any format that will truly be a blessing to someone else. Be creative. Writing a letter to a relative is off limits. It needs to be something that you would not normally do." Just to avoid confusion, it's OK if I write to someone who's not going to write back or someone who has passed. I obviously don't want you to do this for me; I just want a little help getting the ideas flowing. Some examples my teacher has attached are things like a letter to a man who created a curriculum for home-schoolers, or a man who escaped the nazis in Germany (kind of like Corrie Ten Boom). I have ideas already, which consist of a letter to...founders of the Boys and Girls club of America; Peter Benenson, the lawyer who founded Amnesty International; Susan B. Anthony, regarding women's rights; and Edgar J. Helms, founder of Goodwill Industries. If you could give me maybe one or two ideas so I have a larger group to pick from, that would be great. If not, do you think the ideas I already have go along with the instructions and will get me a good grade? Thank you!

Writing a letter to anyone can be good enough in itself. Giving people hope in themselves, others and humanity are always good. You should try to stay away from cliches such as writing to people who have already achieved great things in their lives. You can catch your teacher off guard by choosing a close family member who you have never gotten close to, your neighbor, someone who recently lost their job, or even a person in your school that no one talks to. Choose average people around you, even a complete stranger would work. You don't need much to make a difference in the world. Just show someone you care. Also, you can always write to someone serving in the military.

      3 :
You won't know if he's right for unless you get to know him better. It seems to me that you are ambitious and plan to have an interesting and fulfilling life. This guy doesn't seem ambitious at all. You may find that his lack of drive annoys you after a while. It would be a shame if he held you back from achieving your goals.
      4 :
Hi Sword, No, he doesn't sound right for you. Why? Because of the drinking, smoking, and swearing. He'll probably also expect sex before marriage. You could go out with him, but most likely he won't seem so attractive after a few dates... especially not after kissing him and getting a whiff of smoker's breath. Don't ever think that you'll be able to change him (i.e., getting him to stop smoking, drinking, and swearing). Would you want him to try and change you (i.e., try to get you to start smoking, drinking, swearing, and giving up your virginity to him before marriage)? BTW, well done on deciding to keep your virginity intact... you've avoided lots of heartache, drama, pregnancy scares, and diseases. Signed, PC .

      what makes NYC so AMBITIOUS

      what makes NYC so AMBITIOUS?
I need a direct linkage for the insane work culture here!!! At first I thought it came from London and Europe and its initial settlers. Can't be!! I've trained and been place on work projects in London, The Netherlands, Germany, Francais...Nothing compares to the NYC pace. Could it be an American phenomenon then? We have offices in LA, the South, and midwest. Whenever I visit these offices everything feels soooo sloooooooow, so that can't be it. Could it be Wall Street culture extension? Could be, but this work hard mentality seems to span ALL industries in Manhattan. Legal, Advertising, PR, Accounting, even Nursing. Hours worked here are much, much more, so that can only be a partial answer. NYC pays more than anywhere else? Quite possibly so, but some studies have shown competence doesn't always equal pay (look at DC for example, ha!). So that can't be the full story. Melting pot immigration? Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Singapore are just examples that you don't need diversity to promote this type of ambition, so that's not it. So what exactly is the DIRECT reason for NYC's insane work hard (and thus, play hard) mentality if you could only pinpoint it to one historical event or influence? WHAT MAKES THIS TOWN SO DAMN AMBITIOUS?!?!?!

It depends on whether you need a guy who is totally compatible with your own interests, or not. Obviously this guy is not the same as you, he likes different things, but that doesn't mean you cant be happy with him. I dont think you know him well enough to judge, but you dont have to decide right now. That's what first dates are for. And second, and third, if needbe. Date him, since you find him attractive, and see whether or not you have a connection that's deeper than lifestyle and interests.

      Should I join the army

      Should I join the army?
I am thinking about joining the US Army. I was born and raised in Germany and also served in the german military for 9 months about 6 years ago. I actually did enjoy it and almost signed up for active duty over there. I have been to the States for 6 years and am currently a Green Card holder. I am thinking to join the military as an officer ( I have about 2-3 semesters to go for a Bachelor's in Finance). What are my options? Finish school first or go to a military school? I would like to get into the financial field of the military rather than combat, intelligence, engineering, etc. And I was also told that my wife would stand a better chance to get into a nursing program through the military (she has been on the waiting list for 3-4 years already at a community college) So in short: Green card holder 90 semester units Married with baby on the way :-) Officer's rank (complete school first or join and complete school in military?) thanks Regard: Bobby! I have a Green Card. Why would I care about becoming a citizen faster?? I would sign up for 4 or more years just to get my citizenship a year earlier? HAHAHA Your statement was enough to let everyone know what kind of Vietnam Veteran you are!!!

Although service in any area of the Army is honorable, the hackles on my neck are standing because it appears you only want in the Army to speed up your citizenship. If that is the case then graduate and get a nice civilian job where you will be nice and safe. The men and women in the Army deserve Leaders who put them first and will do whatever it takes to bring them home alive. The don't need an opportunists seeking seeking benefits. Everything stated in your question doesn't make me believe you are Army Officer material. You just don't have the "Right Stuff". I am a 12 year Army veteran who served in Vietnam. I saw opportunist officers when I served and they did more harm than good.

      German population in Chicago

      German population in Chicago?
I am thinking of moving to Chicago after finishing my nursing degree. My aunt told me Chicago has a lot of German influence and culture. I figure a city with a high german population is the next best thing to actually living in Germany.LOL I'm looking for a city where there is large German and/or Dutch population. I have a child (school-age) so I don't want to live somewhere crawling with crime. I don't drive (don't ask! LOL). I will have a BSN/RN soon. Any germans/ dutchy's out there? I could use some penpals! ;)

      2 :
yeah, i agree with above answer. There are German people here, but not a lot. I dont know of any German neighborhoods.
      3 :
Chicago IS crawling with crime. Key West is a lovely place, I don't know about germans there, but the average nationality is alcoholic. Wasted away again........
      4 :
Lincoln Square was once Chicago's German neighborhood, but the German population has assimilated over the decades and is so not very prominent here--at least not to the extent it once was. As other posters noted, you might want to look into moving to Milwaukee, if a German community is important to you. I am sure, however, that you could find German clubs, etc., here, but you would have to be proactive about finding this community.
      5 :
Milwaukee or St. Louis. I live in St. Louis, and there are a lot of Germans here. Quite a few of the Bosnians here speak German too. Michigan has a lot of German towns also, like Frankenmuth.

Question for German Shepherd breeders, owners, trainers, etc.

Question for German Shepherd breeders, owners, trainers, etc.?
I am currently a college student and I plan on getting a German Shepherd Dog when I graduate in about 3 years. I have been planning this for a long time. I've wanted one ever since I was a child, and I've done lots of research on the breed. I have owned and trained many different kinds of dogs including: Rotties, pits, goldens, huskies, labs, pyrenease, and a sheltie. I have worked in different veterinary hospitals for almost 10 years, so I'm knowledgable about the many different types of potential health problems GSD's and dogs in general can have, including hip problems. After evaluating my own personality type and learning that of the german shepherd's, I discovered this dog would be a perfect match for me. I know (almost) exactly what I'm looking for. I want a large (larger than usual) male that is a little more laid back and submissive. The dog would mostly just be my personal pet, but I am planning on training him to be a therapy dog to visit hospitals and nursing homes. I would also do agility with him (mostly just for fun, not too much for competition). I am also a very active person, I would take him swimming, hiking, camping with me on a regular basis. He would need to be extreamly good natured as he will have to tolerate kids, loud noises, eldery, etc. I am still confused as to the different blood lines. What is the difference between American show dog, American working dog, German working lines, Germans show lines, etc? Which type do you think would be good for me? I don't really like the dramatic "slope" of the american show dog's back, plus I heard that's bad for their hips. Also, can anyone suggest a few breeders? I live in southern california, but I am willing to get a GSD anywhere if they are acceptional quality. Which bloodlines are more expensive? What about purchasing from a breeder FROM Germany? Would it be worth it to do it that way? Also ANY other kind of information you can give me about GSD's would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys! sorry, I didn't mean it that way (the bigger than usual). I meant that I have seen really big GSD's and really small GSD's and I preferred one of the larger ones. Of course, I would never buy a puppy from a breeder that wasn't breeding the dogs to its standards. I would never wish for a dog to have bad hips just because I "want him big". That would be selfish on my part. Sorry that I said it wrong.

I would think that showlines would be the most expensive, but I'm not quite sure. I would recommend getting one bred for show, just because they are bred just on their looks. German Shepherd Dogs bred for for working, are FAR more likely to be energetic and restless. My grandfather has 2 German Shepherd Dogs. He got one from a show breeder, and he got one from a breeder that bred shepherds JUST for agility. His show bred dog was much more relaxed, but his agility bred one was extremely fast and was much more obediant. Of course this could just be because of the individual dog, but it could also be because of their bloodlines. I like puppyfind.com, but I would only get one from their if they have their own seperate website, breed ONLY german shepherd dogs, and have proof of their dogs winning in competitions. A well bred German Shepherd Dog costs no less than $800. I no of no German Breeders myself, but I have heard that many are exceptional quality. Good luck in your search for a great dog :) I have a German Shepherd mix puppy at the moment and she is extremely smart and beautiful :) What the heck is with the thumbs down?
      2 :
I don't know much about German Shepard in the show rings. I base my knowledge on the dogs I've met in the animal shelter I volunteer at. But I know a bit abouy how vets for CHD. Here is some information on the two different ways of testing for Canine Hip Dysplasia and Osteoarthritis. There is the traditional American method Called the OFA (orthopedic foundation for Animals) method. Then there is a newer method called the PennHip Method. The researchers at the university of Pennsylvania did a comparison study of the OFA method and the PennHip method (click the link for more info http://avmajournals.avma.org/doi/abs/10.2460/javma.237.5.532) The objective "to compare 2 screening methods for detecting evidence of hip dysplasia (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals [OFA] and PennHIP) in dogs" The procedure "439 dogs ≥ 24 months of age that received routine hip joint screening from June 1987 through July 2008. Dogs were sedated, and PennHIP radiography was performed (hip joint– extended [HE], compression, and distraction radiographic views). The HE radiographic view was submitted for OFA evaluation. A copy of the HE radiographic view plus the compression and distraction radiographic views were submitted for routine PennHIP evaluation, including quantification of hip joint laxity via the distraction index (DI)." The result "14% (60/439) of dogs had hip joints scored as excellent by OFA standards; however, 52% (31/60) of those had a DI ≥ 0.30 (range, 0.14 to 0.61). Eighty-two percent of (183/223) dogs with OFA-rated good hip joints had a DI ≥ 0.30 (range, 0.10 to 0.77), and 94% (79/84) of dogs with OFA-rated fair hip joints had a DI ≥ 0.30 (range, 0.14 to 0.77). Of all dogs with fair to excellent hip joints by OFA standards, 80% (293/367) had a DI ≥ 0.30. All dogs with OFA-rated borderline hip joints or mild, moderate, or severe hip dysplasia had a DI ≥ 0.30 (range, 0.30 to 0.83)." In other words most of the dogs deemed fit to breed by the OFA method, were higher then the PennHip DI scale of 0.30 meaning they are not considered good breeding candidates. Try to find out what method of testing was used by the breeders. See if you can find anyone tested with the PennHip method.
      3 :
@ Laura - I did not give you the TD, but I strongly disagree with you i disagree that showlines would be most expensive. I also have a huge problem with suggesting buying a dog bred for looks alone. That is a HUGE problem, especially in a working breed. Good breeders breed for standard. The standard is much more than just looks, it includes temperament as well. To the OP "I want a large (larger than usual) male that is a little more laid back and submissive" Then don't get a GSD. If you don't want what the breed is, select another breed that better suits what you want. Size standards are there for a reason. As is the temperament. This is a WORKING breed. As I said, good breeders breed for standard. They don't intentionally produce oversized dogs because they understand why the standard matters. Here is a link to the distinctions between the lines plus some other articles you should read if considering http://www.wildhauskennels.com/articles.htm Personally, if t hasn't been proven working and breed surveyed (conformation rating) I am not interested. As I already said, it's a working breed, form AND function matter. I would not consider a showlines dog unless I had proof it could perform the function of the breed. You are wasting time and money importing from Germany. There is no need and unless you know what you are looking for, it isn't a great idea. Keep in mind that all GSDs there need to be titled in Schutzhund or Herding. You are right to want to avoid the ski slope back of the American but please don't make the mistake of going the opposite way. The breed is meant to have a slope, just not the extreme one found in American lines. Here is a great article http://www.shawlein.com/The_Standard/12_Type_Comparison/Comparison_Types.html I am sorry if I was harsh, but I strongly disagree with watering down a work breed. What MAKES this breed the great breed it is is the sharpness, intelligence and drive that it is meant to have. It is much more than looks.
      4 :
Don't get any dog that is not bred to the standard (ie an oversized dog). Maximum acceptable height for an American GSD is 26" for a male and about half an inch smaller for a male from Europe. Anyone who is intentionally breeding over sized dogs is not breeding for the best interests of the breed or for the healthiest dogs. Working lines will always be superior in health and temperament than show lines, be they American or German. The German show lines also tend to be over angulated or roach-backed which is as bad in my book. Their own breed warden was heard to describe them as walking like frogs with bricks tied to their testicles. Working line dogs tend to be of more moderate build, sounder, and more intelligent. A smart dog doesn't tend to do well in the show ring running in circles day in and day out and looking excited about it. So unfortunately, many breeders out for conformation alone are producing dogs with little brains or health screening. A proper GSD is fit for both the breed ring (is bred to the standard) and for work. A dog with working titles in his pedigree is going to be physically sound. Whether he is from herding, schutzhund, SAR, or something else, he depends on his body not failing him in order to perform his job. Never buy a dog sight unseen. Not from Germany, not from anywhere. If you cannot visit the breeder in her own home and meet at least the dam and preferably both parents, then walk the other way. If you want to find a good breeder, go to trials and speak to the owners of dogs you like. Go to agility or obedience or tracking or herding trials for GSDs. Or Schutzhund. Watch the dogs work. Which dogs are sure footed, fearless, devoted to their handler? That's what a GSD should be and that's what you should be looking for. Whether the dog is of German or American or show or working lines does not set the dog's price. His pedigree does that, because his pedigree is the best predictor you have of how he is going to turn out. The better his chances of succeeding in the breed ring or in ring sport, the higher his price. It also isn't the look of the dog that determines the fit to the owner. It is the dog's temperament. A dog ideal for schutzhund or herding will probably be too much dog for you. Be aware that GSDs are not particularly known for being laid back, in that they are active dogs and need a lot of exercise. That's part of the package. If you don't want a dog that wants to get out and do something for a living, then you don't really want a GSD. Look for OFA certificates on both hips and elbows of parents and at least grandparents, but preferably several generations back. --- edited to add --- @ Jessie: The University of Pennsylvania CREATED the PennHIP test (The "Penn" in PennHIP is from "Pennsylvania"). Of course they are going to find ways to claim it is better than the OFA which has been around longer. That doesn't mean it is so. The OFA ratings match up pretty good with the A stamps in Europe, so that's good enough for me. I've actually done research for the OFA as a biomechanical engineer, so I feel qualified to speak on my own expertise and direct knowledge and offer the info that it is what I use on my own dogs.
      5 :
Most important thing is start calling good breeders and explain what you want if they are good they will talk to you and try and match the dog to what you want. I also think make sure they temperament test the dog litter and choose the dog that way.

A new Harvard study said '''woman should get two hours of exercise? Do you agree or disagree? Personally. I jog ten miles a day I get my dose of exercise. Their going to come a time when I do not have time for exercise. I am taking nursing classes in August and taking science classes.I also have to accumulate time for a trip to Germany learn German! I well, be going to school full time and also trying to volunteer at the hospital. I am trying to go for my P.H.D be a Dr. I plan on taking Chemistry more math classes. Just working my way up the ladder. Then being a CNA , and student at the same time. I am going for my CNA first to see if I can handle the blood! Sorry, I am drifting off topic. Well, I kind of disagree with this. I was always taught in high school you get 20 minutes of exercise a day. As long as you got your heart rate up. I mean who has time to work out two hours a day? I know I do, but this is a brief period in my life. I am only taking two college classes. Eventually I am going to be booked! What do you think about this new health study. Be honest would you be able to put two hours of working out in your schedule?

that's tough, cuz i work out for 1.5 hours a day, but that's cuz i'm in high school and there's not a lotta stuff going on in my life so i can workout for that long but i'd do an Insanity or P90X workout, they're 45-90 min long, depending, and they're really tough, so i think i'll do that when i'm in college to fit it in

I completley disagree, most woman don't have the time to put two hours of exercise into there busy schedule.
      2 :
Um...no. Harvard is stupid. I could not workout for two hours a day with schoolwork and everything else. 30 minutes a day is good in my opinion with a healthy diet.
      3 :
2 hours of NONSENSICAL chronic cardio nonsense like running or 2 hours of EVOLUTIUONARY CORRECT WALKING with random sprints? THAT, my dear, is the question........
      4 :
I would love to get two hours of a good work out. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah
      5 :
I guess I'm going to be the only person here who agrees with that statement. <3
      6 :
If you need three hours of exercise, give me a call and we can hook up for the night. Wink, wink! Chinese take out's on me. Hee, hee!
      7 :
disagree (even if its from Harvard); not only is it very impractical for most people to work out that much in a day, your body and muscles need proper recovery, when you work out (especially if your goal is muscle building), you're not gaining muscle but in fact breaking it down and the only way to get it back and build it up is proper recovery through rest and nutrition. Plus, not only can over exercising be discouraging, it also puts you at a much greater risk of injury edit: theres a great article on the subject of over exercising at http://www.muscleandstrength.com/articles/overtraining-why-less-is-more.html

Airplane travel with a 3 Month old Baby?? HELP

Airplane travel with a 3 Month old Baby?? HELP??
I am traveling internationally With my three month old son. How can I make this easier for me as I will be traveling alone. I am going from Germany back home to Texas to visit family. A few things to know to help you answer; - I am nursing - I bought a baby carrier ( the ones you wear in front) - He will be traveling as a lap baby - I plan on Checking two big bags - I will go through security with the Stroller and check it at the gate - Overall the trip will take me 20 hours - I will be getting on three planes total * I am a first Time mom So Anything you have to say would be SUPER helpful. Please no more rude comments about Aiplane Travel with a baby! My husband is stationed in Germany and I would like my family to see the baby and it's cheaper for me to go to them than all of them to come to me! So now airplane travel can not be prevented

I've been flying internationally and domestically with my children since they were 2 months (now 8&5 and baby number 3 was born 23 December). At least three trips a year are the children and I traveling internationally (14+ hours each way) alone. In addition to that, we do another 8-10 international and domestic flights a year as a family. I have never had any problems with my children on any of the flights. Here are a few tips and suggestions as well as answers to your questions: 1.) You will need to have all your baby's documents in order. It is a good idea to keep a copy of his notarized birth certificate with you. Since it is an international trip you will need a passport for your child as well. Keep your doctors name and number with you. Also get the name and number of a doctor where you are visiting in case an emergency should come up. Another thing you should consider bringing with you is your childs immunization book. That way if any emergency should arise while you are on vacation, the treating physician will at least have some verifiable information to go on. This book also usually includes what your child is allergic to, and some small but very helpful notes from your doctor. Verify what travel documents you will need in advance to make sure you have everything. 2.) Since your child is under two, you are allowed to hold him as a lap child, meaning that he will have to sit in your lap the entire time. Try to book a bulkhead (front) seat where you will have more room, and a bassinet. If the bassinet is available (they can only be used in bulkhead seats) it will attach to the front wall for you to put your child in (however you can not use this during taxi, take-offs, landings, or turbulence). This is not the safest way for a child to fly and the airlines recommend children to have their own seat with a child safety device. Many airlines will even offer half-price tickets so parents can be guaranteed that their child can travel in a CRS device. You should call your airline to ask for a discount and/or ask what the airline's policy is for using empty seats. If you haven't booked a separate seat for your child, be nice on check-in and see if they can "block" the seat next to you. They will then only use it if they absolutely need it, leaving it free for you to use during the flight for your child. I highly advise using a CRS (Child Restraint System) because it is safe for the child - especially during turbulence, makes them feel secure, is more comfortable for both parent and child, will help your child sleep, and gives both of you the opportunity to relax a bit. A CRS is a hard-backed child or infant or child safety seat that is approved by the government for use in both motor vehicles and aircraft. Almost all car seats pass this requirement. 3.) You can take a stroller and gate check it. It will not count towards your checked luggage. This means that you will be able to use it all the way up until the time that you board, and one of the handlers will take it from you at your departure gate, tag it, and put it in a special compartment for you. When you exit the plane, it will be waiting for you at the door as well. 4.) Not all children have a problem with the pressure changes in their ears. If yours does however you'll want to know how to help. For take-offs and landings (the WHOLE way up, and starting from the BEGINNING, or TOP of descent), the best ways to alleviate ear pressure are to: *Nurse your son *Give him something to drink (water) *Give him a pacifier to suck on *Place hot damp towels (usually like the ones distributed to first and business class before take-off and landing to freshen up with - just ask a flight attendant for them) or paper towels that have been soaked in hot water and wrung out, at the bottom of two paper or styrofoam cups, then hold the cups over the ears *Gently but with some pressure, rub his neck repeatedly from the chin to the base of the neck. This will cause a swallowing motion that will relieve pressure build-up in the ears. 5.) As long as your child is with you, you are able to take as much formula, breast milk, or regular milk that you will need for you child for the duration of the time you will spend in the airport and on the flight (as long as it is within reason). And no, you will NOT have to taste it - no matter what form you bring it in. All that you must do is: 1. Separate the milk from the liquids, gels, and aerosols in your quart-size (1 liter) zip-top bag. 2. Declare you have the items to one of the Security Officers at the security checkpoint. 3. Present these items for additional inspection once reaching the X-ray. These items are subject to additional screening http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/children/formula.shtm http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=MEMO/06/363&format=HTML&aged=0&language=EN&guiLanguage=en http://www.dft.gov.uk/transportforyou/airtravel/airportsecurity/requirements New regulations also allow you to take beverages (including water) from home as long as they are less than 3oz (100ml), -OR- beverages (including water) of any size that you have purchased from inside the security area onto planes. You can also bring a limited amount of baby food, yogurt, cheese, puddings, etc. with you also as long as they are in containers less than 3oz (100ml) http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm#10 http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=MEMO/06/363&format=HTML&aged=0&language=EN&guiLanguage=en http://www.dft.gov.uk/transportforyou/airtravel/airportsecurity/requirements Save your money when it comes to buying water though because the Flight Attendants will provide you with hot or cold water (or any other drink) free at any time that you request, no matter how many times you request it. 6.) Keep your diaper bag well stocked with plenty of diapers, wipes, ointments and other essential things. Just remember the new law regulating liquids, gels, and such and pack accordingly. http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm http://ec.europa.eu/transport/air_portal/security/rules_liquids/doc/2006_aviation_security_new_rules_poster_en.pdf http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/security/aviation/airport/airportsecurityadvertisement You can usually find travel size baby products in stores and they are wonderful for plane use. One thing I always like to carry with me is hand sanitizer! I always wipe the trays down with that (followed by a baby wipe) and use it for my kids after taking them to the bathroom (even though they wash their hands). I know that airplane bathrooms are not the cleanest, so that is why I try be vigilant. Be sure to pack 2-3 changes of clothes for your child. You will need this in case he gets sick, spills something on himself, or in case your luggage gets lost. Bring any medications that you might need for your child should he get sick or that he takes regularly. Remember that if they are not prescription medications, the 3oz (100ml) rule applies to them and they must be kept in a clear plastic bag. http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm http://ec.europa.eu/transport/air_portal/security/rules_liquids/doc/2006_aviation_security_new_rules_poster_en.pdf http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/security/aviation/airport/airportsecurityadvertisement Do NOT give your child medicine with the hopes of it making him sleep. This is not only cruel, but dangerous as well. I have also seen where it backfires; a parent gives their child a dose of Benedryl to make them sleep, but instead it gets the child more hyper and the parents get absolutely no rest on the flight (and neither does anyone else). 7.) You should be respectful of other passengers and always change your child's diaper in the restroom. They do have diaper bed changers in there, although they can be a little small. Usually the bathrooms with the diapers beds are the handicap ones (they usually tend to be toward the rear of the plane), so they tend to be a little bit bigger and it does help. I also know some people who say that instead of using the changing table, they say to put the toilet seat down, use the toilet as a seat for yourself, and lay the baby across your knee to change their diaper. To make it easier on yourself, make sure that you undress your baby so that he has just a diaper on while at your seat. Grab your diaper, wipes, and ointment or baby powder (whatever you use for changing your childs diaper) and head to the bathroom. This will help to make the procedure faster and easier. Try to change your childs diaper as close to boarding as possible. This will help to make you baby feel fresh and more comfortable for take-off (which could also mean less problems). 8.) Make sure to pack one or two comfort things such as a favorite blankie or stuffed animal. I always bring a small pillow and blanket from home for my children (even now) because I know 100% that they are clean, and my children are accustomed to them. You can also walk up and down the aisles with your son which will give him something different to see, and help to break up the length of the flight for him. 9.) Don't worry about what the other passengers are going to think or say should your baby cry. This will only add stress, which your child can pick up on, and it could make him cry longer and harder. Instead, just relax, and handle the situation like you would if you were at home. Most times the other passengers are very understanding anyways and some will even try to help you. Which reminds me, if help is offered to you, TAKE it! I wrote a small article about flying with children that goes more in-depth, gives airport security rules and regulations for the US, EU, and UK, plus offers tips and tricks for the travel, etc. http://www.angelfire.com/jamiehassen79/flying_children.html If I can be of any more help or assistance, please feel free to contact me.

So is the debate on Iraq basically going... Well I know this guy over there and he says??
I know a nurse that works in Germany where the wounded go. He says they get plane loads of injured every week. I think 1 American without 1 leg is entirely too much. I strongly disagree with a body count as a measure for a wars severity. The severity is in the kids without dads/moms; the disabled one at a time!!!

I agree, tell that to the insurgents that do that to these people.

What's even worse is the guy that comes home with one leg will not recieve the assistance he deserves because Republicans believe it is "socialist" to help Americans. I agree wit you htough. We may only have 3300 dead, but we have tens of thousands of injured, not to mention the PTSD that most of them are suffering from because of the horrors they have experienced. ....some things are just as bad as death.
      3 :
YES! I always hear 3,225 dead but not the 50,000 who literally are not walking away from this.

And to Steve above - What we are against is paying for the livliehood forever more of everday people who have PTSD because someone was mean to them once. Get a grip!

68,000 Iraq civilians deaths by car bomb, uncivilized thugs killing their own and you want to let them run rampant?...you big wuss why don't you get a pair.

the invasion and occupation of Iraq was a mistake and has turned out to be a disaster. Democrats have no choice but to work towards an ending to the fiasco and civil war there which is because of the mistakes by Bush-Cheney. The US is not prepared to help those who have lost sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, husbands, wives, fathers and mothers, much less those who have been wounded and lost limbs or brain activity. The sadness and struggle for years to come will be as a direct result of the Bush doctrine and the tragedy to America and Iraq as a result. The world will not soon forget the horror and treachery of the current commander in chief.
      9 :
Who cares about the wrongs and the rights of this war? Your opinion means jack because whatever you say or do doesn't affect the outcome. I just can't wait for the inevitable world war 3 to get underway and I believe by 2010 it will be well in full swing and the majority of you believers in, this country won't do this because it isn't in their economical interests to do so and this country won't do that because they need this country to prosper crap. World war 3 will be a no holds barred, ultimate scramble for survival and those who didn't live through the last world war as I didn't, cannot even comprehend a third one. Everyone has their pissant little view on what should happen in the war but it is not your decision. Or your friends or neighbours or family. Just forget about worrying whether 1 leg is too much or kids without parents and get ready to survive an all out world war. If you cannot see it coming you are blind.

It's so true, yet the president and people backing him don't look at our casualties of war as people with families, they are totally detached to what happens to these people. Oh, sure they go out and shake hands with a wounded person or a person who lost a loved one for PR sake, but they see these people as a means to thier end. They couldn't even fathom putting thier own family members into a situation where they may die, or lose parts of their bodies. Just the pedestal he puts himself on, and the level of protection he makes the military give him for any live speech he makes, clearing the skies, making no fly zones, having snipers on roofs, and secret service surrounding him, in order to visit a school or town for a couple of minutes to talk to the people. Yet our soldiers are sent out into a haven of terrorist, some with no idea of how to protect themselves, is something wrong with this picture? I'd like to know why this president doesn't go over to Iraq to visit our troops? He will go to Saudi Arabia, because these people who were responsible for supplying most of the terrorist that bombed the Twin Towers, are his friends. This president shoves it right in our faces, and all we seem to be able to do in retaliation, is drop our jaws and scratch our heads. Tell your nurse friend that we really appreciate her for what she's doing for our troops and we are fighting to try to stop this war, so she won't have to see fresh military men and women blown to pieces anymore. God Bless them all, it won't happen but, I hope we can bring them home without losing another person.
