Harassment and bullies at the working place in Germany. Please, help!?
I am a medical doctor and started recently working in a hospital in Germany. As this is the first time i am in this country, i had some difficult moments with the language at the beginning. The problem is that instead of trying to be supporting, my boss and the nurses are making jokes of that. Which frustrates me really much and is the reason i could not improve my proficiency of the german language at all for the last 2 months. And when my boss humiliated me before about 10 nurses. She said smth i could not at first understand and then she just repeated the same thing 3 times with exactly the same words, looking at me as if i was an idiot to not understand, which made the nurses laughing and joking about that. I was so embarrassedd, i could not say a proper sentence and just left the meeting. Plus, cos i have only 1 yr working experience, the nurses treat me as if i am some kind of mentally retarded and ignore me almost all the time. Instead of being tought i am all the time pushed to do stuff i am not ready for. And after that - looked at as if i am a complete idiot and of course "oh, you know, in our universities in Germany we do this and those so good, obviously in your country you haven't been taught that well..." Please, could anyone give me advice what to do and how to fight this harassment and humiliation. I am so frustrated that my german even gets worse and worse. I can't do my job well, cos there is always someone to look at me in a disrespectful manner. I can't take it anymore and have started looking for another job. But it takes time to find new placements and to go on interviews and so on. And on the other hand, this is a well paid job in a town i quite like - why should i lose this job just cos they think they can abuse me. Any legal advice would be really highly appreciated! This is a tough one. Your obvious hurt seems to further encourage your colleagues to make jokes at your expense. I cannot give you any legal advice but there should be recourse to bullying (mobbing) which the hospital's leadership is required to address if brought to their attention. My personal experience shows that mobbing is seldom a curable disease and will continue long after the original rationale is forgotten. You could try appealing to their better nature by explaining how their behaviour affects you. Try the following first: Gut, ihr habt euren Spass, was ihr möglichgerweise nicht wisst ist wie sehr Eure Kommentare mich verletzen. Ich will ein guter Kollege sein aber dies kann ich nur wenn ihr mich auch lasst. Wenn die Situation umgekehrt wäre und ihr in meinem Land versuchen würdet Fuss zufassen würde ich euch jegliche Hilfestellung geben damit ihr erfolgreich sein könntet. Bitte gebt mir die gleiche Chance. Then add that you have take the step to go to night school or the Goethe Institute to better your german and that you would be grateful for any day to day assistance they might give in correcting your german. Finally find it in yourself to laugh along if you really goof up. Some things actually CAN be funny.
